How It Works
- 1. Soil test and cold-hardy grass selection. We measure the yard, check sun hours and irrigation, pull a soil sample and probe for caliche. Full sun gets Latitude 36 or TifTuf Bermuda, low water gets buffalo grass, deep shade gets fescue. You get a firm number, not a range.
- 2. Strip, break hardpan and grade. Old turf comes out with a sod cutter. We break the caliche layer where we find it, then grade so water leaves the slab and has a route off the property, which on ground this flat has to be designed rather than assumed.
- 3. Amend, irrigate and install. Compost goes into the top four inches, with gypsum where sodium shows in the test. Irrigation is installed and tested while the ground is open, then sod is laid tight in staggered seams and rolled for real soil contact.
- 4. Water, feed and establish. We program the controller for short early-morning cycles three times a day for ten days, because a midday cycle here mostly waters the next county. Starter fertilizer at install, first mow around three weeks, follow-up inside 30 days.

What grass survives Lubbock winters?
Cold hardiness is the real question here and it varies by cultivar, not just by species. Latitude 36 and NorthBridge are hybrid Bermudas bred at Oklahoma State specifically for winter survival in colder regions, and they are what we specify most often. Riviera is a cold-hardy seeded Bermuda. Buffalo grass is native to this country and shrugs winter off entirely.
Meyer is the cold-hardy Zoysia. Fescue and bluegrass are cool-season and stay green through winter but cost more to water in July.
Why is my lawn brown all winter? Is it dead?
Almost certainly not. Bermuda, buffalo grass and Zoysia are warm-season grasses and they go fully dormant here from roughly November until April, turning straw-brown. That is normal on the South Plains and it catches new arrivals out every single year. The test is simple: if the crowns are still firm and the lawn greens up in April, it was dormant.
If it stays brown while the neighbors green up, that is winterkill or spring dead spot and we should look at it.
When is the best time to lay sod in Lubbock?
Late spring through early autumn for warm-season grass, once soil has warmed and the risk of a late freeze has passed. May through September is the safe window and September is arguably the best of all: warm soil, less heat stress, and the roots get established before dormancy. An April install can work but a late freeze will set it back. Cool-season fescue and bluegrass go in during autumn or early spring.
Why does my flat yard hold water after a storm?
Because flat is exactly the problem. The Llano Estacado is famously level and drains internally into playa basins, so surface water does not simply run downhill and leave. Add alkaline clay loam that percs slowly and a caliche layer that perches water above it, and a semi-arid city ends up with soggy yards after a thunderstorm. The fix is grading, a swale or a drain with somewhere real to go, and we shoot the site before we quote.
How do I keep the wind from drying out new sod?
Water in the early hours, when wind is at its lowest, and use nozzles that throw a heavier droplet instead of a fine mist. We schedule three short cycles a day for the first ten days, use pressure-regulated bodies so heads do not mist at high pressure, and get the sod down and rolled the same day it arrives rather than letting pallets stand in a spring gale.
